Advanced Rural Training Pathway

Coast City Country General Practice Training (CCCGPT) is pleased to announce the creation of a new Advanced Rural Training Pathway for rural pathway GP Registrars joining its GP training program in 2012. This pathway is available to Australian General Practice Training Program Registrars choosing the Murrumbidgee/Riverina region as a rural training location, training and working in practices and rural hospitals across the region including: Cootamundra, Gundagai, Hay, Leeton, Lockhart, Narrandera, Temora, Tumut and Young.

CEO Sharon Flynn explains "The creation of the Advanced Rural Training Pathway has been made possible through the commitment of Murrumbidgee Local Health District to addressing the specific training needs of CCCGPT General Practice Registrars seeking hospital terms at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital, procedural training posts funded by NSW Health in Wagga Wagga and Griffith and Registrar VMO appointments across the region.

The creation of smaller autonomous Health Districts has worked well for us, together our executives have been able to focus on medium term strategies to relieve the pressure on GPs in our training practices in smaller centres. Gundagai and RDAA President Dr Paul Mara, has also been instrumental in this collaboration."

Dr Tim Caton (Director Medical Education) adds: "The creation of the pathway for 2012 is the result of the improved coordiantion of existing training opportunities, incentives and practice matching processes. Registrars will be supported to complete Fellowships of the Australian College of Remote and Rural Medicine (FACRRM) and the Royal Australian College of General Practice (FARGP). Education and support for pathway participants will be provided from the hubs of Wagga Wagga and Griffith.

In announcing these opportunities CCCGPT is aware that system wide change to the support training of the next generation of rural practitioners is a high priority of the NSW Minister for Health and her Department and it looks forward to the prospect of supporting broader reforms and increased rural training opportunities in the region, beyond 2012.
